If a Tree Falls the film
2012
Academy award nominee for best documentary and 2011
Documentary Editing Award Sundance
The Story
In December 2005, Daniel McGowan was arrested by
Federal agents in a nationwide sweep of radical environmentalists involved with
the Earth Liberation Front-- a group the FBI has called America's "number one
domestic terrorism threat."
For years, the ELF—operating in separate anonymous cells without any central leadership—had launched spectacular arsons against dozens of businesses they accused of destroying the environment: timber companies, SUV dealerships, wild horse slaughterhouses, and a $12 million ski lodge at Vail, Colorado.
With the arrest of Daniel and thirteen others, the government had cracked what was probably the largest ELF cell in America and brought down the group responsible for the very first ELF arsons in this country.
IF A TREE FALLS: A STORY OF THE EARTH LIBERATION FRONT tells the remarkable
story of the rise and fall of this ELF cell, by focusing on the transformation
and radicalization of one of its members.
Part coming-of-age tale, part cops-and-robbers thriller, the film interweaves a verity chronicle of Daniel on house arrest as he faces life in prison, with a dramatic recounting of the events that led to his involvement with the group. And along the way it asks hard questions about environmentalism, activism, and the way we define terrorism.
Drawing from striking archival footage -- much of it never before seen -- and intimate interviews with ELF members, and with the prosecutor and detective who were chasing them, IF A TREE FALLS explores the tumultuous period from 1995 until early 2001 when environmentalists were clashing with timber companies and law enforcement, and the word "terrorism" had not yet been altered by 9/11.

Join
Vandana Shiva, Annie Leonard, Richard Heinberg, Bill
McKibben, Anuradha Mittal, Manish Jain and many others
for a ground-breaking international conference on
economic localization. Hosted by
ISEC, the conference will examine the structures and
myths on which the corporate-controlled global economy
is based, and explore how a new economy -- one based on
an economics of happiness -- can be built by supporting
the local, globally. We will draw inspiration from
grassroots localization initiatives in food, energy,
education business and banking, and from the Occupy
movement, Transition Towns, ecovillages, indigenous
resistance movements, and more. The conference will
build on momentum generated by our documentary film,
The Economics of Happiness, which has
already set the stage for an international dialogue
about localization. Come and be part of the discussion!
Capacity is limited, so
register before February to reserve your place and
to receive the discounted ticket price.
Please e-mail

Bio
Integrating death into the cycle of life with joy!

Rev. Olivia Barham

About Olivia...
Olivia Bareham
holds a bachelors degree in Natural Theology in Sacred Healing and is an
ordained minister of healing. Olivia's experience as a nurses aide,
elder care provider and hospice volunteer, inspired her to investigate a
more sacred and personal alternative to traditional after-death care
practices.
"At the event of death and for a few days following, there is a window
of opportunity for great healing to occur. I noticed that when the
funeral director stepped in, very often, this window silently, and
permanently, closed. Families were left feeling empty and helpless,
often with a feeling of incompleteness," says Olivia.
In an effort to
find a way to keep this window of healing open, Olivia completed a
course in death midwifery and home funerals, resulting in certification
as a Home Funeral Guide. She subsequently founded "Sacred Crossings" to
assist families in Los Angeles create funerals for their loved one, at
home. To learn more about Sacred Crossings, please visit the website
