The Portland area is a hotbed of localization initiatives and we will be joined by at least 50 partner organizations, offering workshops on everything from local investing to storytelling, alternative economic indicators to earth-based education. There will also be more than 20 speakers from around the US and the world, who will be covering a range of interconnected topics – local food, technology, healthcare, local business, indigenous rights, environmental justice and much, much more.

Declan Kennedy in Dialog: Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 7:30pm at L.A. Eco-Village

Prof. Declan Kennedy is an Irish architect, urban planner, permaculture designer and ecologist. Founder  of the Permaculture Institute of Europe, he has been teaching and practicing urban design, landscape and agricultural planning since 1972.

Declan served as Professor of Urban Design at the Technical University of Berlin, Chairman of the Board of the Global Eco-village Network – www.gen-europe.org – and as Chairman of the Advisory Board at Gaia University International – www.gaiauniversity.org

Paul Glover: Author, Activist, Founder gives a Public talk at L.A. Eco-Village Friday, October 4, 2013 at 7:30pm

Join us for an exciting event with local currency pioneer, Paul Glover founder of Ithaca HOURS, a successful local paper currency in Ithaca NY. Launched in 1991, Ithaca Hours promotes local economic strength and community self-reliance by keeping the wealth circulating within the region. http://www.ithacahours.org/

Paul is also founder of the grass roots association known as Citizen Planners, publisher of  Sensual Cities, in the 1970s which inspired a variety of other early sustainability oriented organizations in Los Angeles.  He authored the little book  Los Angles: A History of the Future which is available on-line http://www.issuu.com/metroeco/docs/lahof   (free).  Originally published in 1982,  this little book envisions a permaculture city that is ecologically stable and locally managed on a human scale.

Bio: Paul Glover is founder of 18 organizations and campaigns, including Ithaca HOURS local currency, Citizen Planners of Los Angeles, Health Democracy, the Philadelphia Orchard Project (POP), and the League of Uninsured Voters (LUV). He is author of six books on grassroots economies, and a former professor of urban studies at Temple University. He also consults as Greenplanners.

We are an interconnected community of people who help each other by sharing our abilities, talents and experiences. By both giving and receiving, we learn to appreciate the value of each and every member and also come to believe in the value of our own contributions. When you provide a service for another member you earn one time credit for each hour you spend providing the service. You can then exchange each time credit you earn for an hour of service from someone else. Instead of separating our community into those who need and those who provide, we recognize that we all have needs and gifts to share.

Time Banking is a pay it forward system that connects unmet needs with untapped resources.

For every hour you help another member, you earn a Time Credit. Then you can use that Time Credit to have a neighbor help you:  getting a ride, learning the computer, getting a haircut, gardening, etc. Time Credits value everyone’s contributions equally. One hour equals one Time Credit.  Time credits can also be used to exchange goods, as well as services.

Time Banks have spread throughout the country, and into many Los Angeles neighborhoods.  Come to an orientation to learn whether you should join or start a time bank in your neighborhood.
